The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, prone to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, such a setup requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
