Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Earn Nostalgic Win Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the City Ground as Nottingham Forest fans reveled in a further result against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Francis's decisive header clinched the European Cup back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those memories. Similarly, major shifts have occurred in the five weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking refreshed and earning a convincing win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.

Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing sixth in their domestic league – represented a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any significant jeopardy or nerves.

This was an event filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive clash between the teams since the showpiece event over four decades past.

Forest fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company received a tumultuous reception when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically impressive display was unveiled in the Trent End.

Remembering the Past

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed one part of a giant banner, in block capitals. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the squads came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo depicted Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the night? It was strong, too. They were in complete control from the moment the forward fired an attempt off target inside two minutes and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the first dent in the Malmö defense captained by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since last March.

Another Strike Confirms Dominance

Yates was involved in the team's next goal on the brink of the interval, as well, his unmarked header saved by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards Yates at the back post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned aside off Malmö back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe, and an free Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at their ground recently, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently brought on teenage defender Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche discussed the club legends supplying “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
