British Extends Methanol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Countries
The UK government has placed 11 more countries to its travel warning roster concerning the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated beverages.
This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Only last month, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to a number of notable events like the deadly loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.
While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.
But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.
Authorities' Recommendations for Travellers
Government representative a senior official said that each tourist should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits abroad, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.
"In case something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – get medical help right away."
The full roster of countries identified as carrying a threat of methanol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
