Accused Harasser Inquired: 'Yet Imagine I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman charged with harassing Kate McCann reportedly deposited her a voicemail message which questioned: "what if I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has repeatedly claimed she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial charged with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court heard phone records and data obtained from phones logged Ms Wandelt persistently requesting Madeleine's mother for a DNA test during that period.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is considered the most publicized missing child cases and is still unresolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another recorded message, played in court, captured Ms Wandelt saying: "I know I'm heavy and plain like Madeleine had been, but I believe what I know."
While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's recording stated: "What if there is a tiny probability that I am she? Then what? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I possess a life here in Poland, I just want to discover," she added.
The jury was informed that via electronic messages, text messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a genetic test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a bid to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a early life with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, an investigator with the police force who gathered the evidence, told the court there "showed no any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore contacted family friends of the McCanns, based on the communication logs.
On 9 October 2024, Mr McCann picked up a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "incorrect contact information."
During that incident Ms Wandelt deposited a message on Mrs McCann's recording saying "I will continue and I plan to establish my point."
The court learned the co-defendant established a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding accompanying her on a trip to the McCanns' property in Leicestershire in that winter.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had communicated using communication app to Mrs McCann to say the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the months leading up to the visit to that location, Leicestershire, in last December.
The court learned correspondence between the two individuals, in November 2024, planning endeavoring to obtain Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her garbage or from cutlery at a dining venue.
"We must take action," Mrs Spragg advised Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the visit to their home, the defendant sent a communication which stated: "We're currently sitting near the McCanns' house with our lights out similar to private investigators. I wanted to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The trial proceeds.
